Gender discrimination is one of the most common forms of human rights violations as an abuse of rights that affects millions of people globally. Despite obvious progress, gender discrimination continues to span various areas of society. That is why gender issues are currently of particular concern, and policy makers and governments should take the appropriate actions to eliminate gender discrimination in society.

I understand gender discrimination as the practice of treating people differently, unfavorably or unequally, because of gender, which results in men and women having unequal opportunities in society. Millions of women and men around the world have different opportunities in getting a good job, education, health care, income, or access to the same resources because of their gender. In some countries, women’s rights are significantly limited: women are not allowed to vote, participate in the political and economic life, hold political office, or be elected to the government in their country. In Saudi Arabia, for example, until recently, women were not allowed to vote, drive, or travel abroad without a male guardian (Human Rights Watch, 2019).

The international community emphasizes the importance of gender equality as an important condition for solving many economic, demographic, and other problems. Since 2006, the World Economic Forum publishes the Annual Global Gender Gap Report, in which it identifies and measures the gap between men and women in health, education, economics, and politics around the world, and evaluates how different countries have performed in terms of narrowing the Global Gender Gap Index. According to the last Report, it is going to take more than a lifetime to close the global gender gap, but some countries are doing better than others (World Economic Forum, 2020).

To sum it up, I can say that gender discrimination is a violation of human rights; gender equality is of the highest value and an important indicator of whether societies are developing. Despite significant progress in narrowing the global gender gap in a number of countries, gender discrimination still exists in the world. I think this issue is currently of utmost importance.
